Like a fine aged tequila, the inside of this band is strong, smooth & nurtured with a 15 year partnership to explore & create music. Founded in the early 90's by Jason Filyaw and Todd Petreins, with guidance from Dave Raphael, they gradually accumulated an extensive catalog of songs which eventually matured into the headset reflected by Riva today. Currently, Riva is in the studio diligently working on a third record with the occasional time off for galavanting and adventure well deserved by three old friends.
Riva is a special project for its members. Jason Filyaw and Todd Petreins have been playing together in numerous bands since 1990, Dave Raphael has been recording them since the beginning. The band benefits from the chemistry that can only be achieved over a 15 year working relationship. Over the course of several bands and many years, the three members always wished there was a cool place to record having failed in other studios along the way spending countless dollars, never properly capturing the moment and feeling outside management pressure every step along the way. In 2001 Raphael founded Glide On Fade, Inc and established a studio to realize the goals the band had thus far been unsuccessful at achieving. Finally there was a place to hang out, write and record on their own terms. Keeping the entire recording and record label process in house, amongst themselves, Riva shows a certain pride, care and freedom often absent from other projects. With that in mind Riva discarded the notion of big industry and locked themselves away to focus on their own undisturbed, undilluted version of great rock recordings. What Riva offers is not the version of their music that a record label thought would be appropriate for the masses but simply stated, the version of their music that they thought was cool, period.
"Year Of Motion" is Riva's second release, out in September 2005. With a refreshed calm head, Riva returns with a custom made sound and new defined purpose. In a world of records made on computers, Riva looked for inspiration towards the early 1970's, rebuilt the sutdio with discrete transistor recording electronics from the era and recorded a record on tape in a linear fashion the way Led Zeppelin or the Rolling Stones would have done back in the day. "Year Of Motion" is a %100 analog, %100 discrete transistor, %100 linear recording with no pitch correction on vocals (or anything else), no editing of any kind, and all one take rhythm track performances.
"The Dig" first released in 2003 was Riva's first official release. Recorded while Glide On Fade was under construction, the band fought against the mayhem of building a studio to pause and make a great record. "The Dig" started as another band project but finished as the realization of Filyaw, Peterins and Raphael as a solo unit.
